Silicone o-rings (VMQ) offer wide temperature ranges and low temperature flexibility. Silicone is renowned for its retention of flexibility and low compression set characteristics. Silicone also has one of the widest working temperature ranges for elastomers.

Phenyl (PVMQ) based silicone o rings can perform to -100°C (-148°F). New polymers can take short term to 315°C (600°F).

Silicone o rings. Resistant to hot air, ozone, UV radiation, engine and transmission oils, animal and vegetable fats and oils. Silicone o-rings also have low resistance to mineral oils and can be compounded to be electrically resistant, conductive, or flame retardant.

Silicone should be used for static sealing. Silicones have poor tensile strength, poor tear resistance, and poor abrasion resistance. Silicones offer excellent resistance to extreme temperatures from -50°C to + 225°C.

Silicone O-rings perform well in a range of environments:

Mineral oils with low additive contents.
Ozone.
Dry heat.

Silicone o rings are not recommended for dynamic O-ring sealing applications. This is due to their relatively low tear strength and high coefficient of friction. Silicone does not perform well with the following:
Concentrated acids.
Fuels.
Gear Oils.
Ketones (MEK, Acetone).
Steam.
