About Nitrile O-rings

Nitrile rubber (NBR) is the general term for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Copolymer. Nitrile is the most widely used and economical elastomer. Nitrile o-rings offer excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels, silicone greases, hydraulic fluids, water and alcohols.

Key uses of Nitrile o-rings

All types of oil resistant applications.
Low temperature military uses.
Off-road equipment.
Automotive, marine, aircraft fuel systems.

Nitrile O rings can be compounded for FDA applications.

Nitrile o rings offer a good balance of working properties. Working properties include; low compression set, high tensile strength, and high abrasion resistance. Carboxylated Nitrile has excellent abrasion resistance, providing improved oil resistance.

The most widely used compounds have a Nitrile (ACN) content of approximately 32%. They are known as “Medium Nitrile”. Compounds with approximately 50% ACN content are known as “High Nitrile”. These seals are usually recommended for use with Hydrocarbon fuels. Compounds with approximately 18% ACN content are known “Low Nitrile”. These compounds are usually specified for use with Low temperature applications.

Nitrile o-rings comprise of the copolymer butadiene and acrylonitrile in varying proportions.

Limitations

Nitrile o-rings compounds are attacked by small amounts of Ozone. Phthalate type plasticizers are commonly used in compounding Nitrile rubber. These plasticizers can migrate out and cause problems with certain plastics. Also, new regulation on certain phthalates have limited their use.
